Written as a companion piece to Libby Larson's cycle: "Try Me, Good King: the last words of the wives of Henry VIII", Jane the Quene sets the final words of Lady Jane Grey, recorded from her speech at the scaffold in 1554. Jane was a titular queen for only nine days, before being executed in the Tower of London, at the age of only 16.

This short piece is taken from the last movement of “Mannequin”, a set of three portraits inspired by the work of the great designer Alexander McQueen. This movement of the work drew inspiration from an ensemble of McQueen’s featured in the “Savage Beauty” collection, a headpiece, corset,and skirt made of hundreds of dark black feathers.

Reaching Within is a work which explores embodiment and the performance of gender within the context of a solo recital in a concert space. The work was conceived as part of a body of research into the gendered-body and its relationship to the structures and conventions of classical music, audience and performer prejudices, and freedom of expression within the Western Art Music tradition.
